Since it was labor day weekend, we all had a three day weekend which was much needed. Instead of spending my usual labor day weekend on a beach, this year I was on a 6 mile hike up a mountain. The hike was really nice, and we were able to see so many amazing views and take some really nice pictures. The beginning of the hike was straight up hill and then it leveled off so we were all able to take in the view. We then ended up at Beaver Lake and just took in the sights. Getting back down the mountain we took a different route through a valley which was so cool and full of blooming flowers. After the hike, we all went to different garage sales to find things. The cool thing about Sitka is that when you tell people that you are AmeriCorps, they will just give you things for free, so I was able to get 2 tall lamps, kitchen appliances and camping gear for free. After that I decided to go get some work done at Highliner since there were so many people in the house. Highliner is crawling with all the Mt. Edgecumbe kids that just got here for school. Edgecumbe is a High School on the other island over the bridge that is a boarding school where kids form all over Alaska go to school since most of the paces the kids are form are so small that there is no high school. The actual mountain Edgecumbe, is a dormant volcano that you can hike up. That is a 14 mile hike. The weather has been nice lately so running outside is not so much a chore. Another AmeriCoprs member and I are trying to run to the ferry and back which is 5 miles both ways, so that way when we all have to like Mt. Edgecumbe, we are prepared lol. Looking forward to a 3 day school week since am off Friday for orientation!
Have a good day fam,
Ashley
